Remember to keep exterior lights on your residence overnight; keep windows covered when not at home and when workers are trimming trees, etc.; put inexpensive steel rods just below the inside of exterior knobs; close and lock windows and doors even when working outside in your yard; and invest in a security system if you can.

Hi Lou,
Just wanted to let you know my house was broken into yesterday. They pryed the service door open going into my garage which is located in the rear of the house, not visible from the road. The alarm went off when they entered the kitchen from the garage. Between the alarm and the dogs they closed the door and left. Nothing was taken. My alarm went off at 2:30 p.m. The door they pryed open, was very secure. My son put it in using the extra heavy steel plates longer screws, extra screws, heavy duty deadbolt. I have a feeling by the way my dog was acting, the person got dog bit. I hope so anyway!

We have also learned that the "change" he stole on 1/14, amounted to $2500 that the victims had been saving for a trip.
A neighbor had described the burglarer's vehicle parked in the victims' driveway to them. They recognized it as belonging to the girlfriend of a former employee and reported that to the FCSD.

Pleasant Township residents:
About 6 A.M this morning, 3 burglars entered a house in the cul-de-sac at the end of Oakhurst Dr. by forcing open a sliding glass door. They stole a computer, laptop, Wii game, 8 bottles of wine, 4 wine glasses, 3 binoculars, cutting knives, purse and wallet containing a credit card, debit card and $100 in cash. They also were in the vehicles in the garage and in the small greenhouse. The owners and their 2 small dogs were not awakened by the burglars.
The 3 burglars then attempted a burglary at another house in the cul-de-sac on Oakhurst Dr. by cutting the screen on the back door. When they touched the glass, the security alarm sounded and scared them off.
These burglars had parked on Wahl Ct.
If you can afford a security system, please purchase one.
Pleasant Township Residents:
We have learned that the burglarers had cut the telephone wires at the second house they attempted to burglarize on Oakhurst Dr, between 5 and 6 A.M. this morning. The security system alarm went off and scared them away. Fortunately, the deputy sheriffs were able to obtain fingerprints off the window they had attempted to enter. Hopefully, a match can be found within a reasonable length of time. We hope that these prints will be processed quickly because the attempted burglary occurred with the occupants in the home. Usually, routine fingerprint processing by the Ohio BCI takes 6 months.

After a record-setting number of burglaries being reported in July, no burglaries, just one B&E and two thefts were reported in August in Pleasant Township. For this, we have the FCSD personnel and the Hilliard Police to thank for arresting and/or preparing charges against suspected burglaries.
The B&E was at 4800+ Opossum Rd. (FE, misc. tools, 5 gallon can of gasoline and grow lights.) The two thefts were reported at:
Two residents of Pleasant Township were victims of the misuse of their credit cards.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Wednesday, August 8, the theft of a riding lawnmower was reported at 6400+ Oakhurst Drive. While the residents were in Grove City, somebody used a little key to start a riding lawnmower parked on the property and drove it toward the road. Something must have scared the thief, because the owners found it there when they returned home.
Obviously, it is too easy for a lawnmower parked outside to be stolen with another similar key. So if you must leave your lawnmower outside, use a chain and lock to secure it to something on your property. This would, at least, make it more difficult for someone to steal it.

The Deputy and I discussed a suspiciously acting solicitor that was observed by several Oakhurst residents on Monday, July 9. The thin, young Black man (6' tall, small mustache) had been dropped off (and picked up) in the neighborhood supposedly to sell meat from a small Pride Meat Company. At the June 26 meeting of the Pleasant Township Trustees, a FCSD Corporal described two suspects wanted by the FCSD in connection with several burglaries in our township:
A white male, in his twenties, with large holes in his ears for big loop earrings, and a white female, 5' 5" tall, weighing 110 lbs, driving a 2006 gray Ford Crown Victoria with no license plate on the damaged front end and decal shadows on the vehicle. The vehicle has been seen backed into the driveways of homes that have been burglarized. If you see this vehicle and couple acting suspiciously, immediately phone the FCSD radio room at 525-3333.

We now have a total of 9 burglaries reported this month in Pleasant Township.
When conversing with your neighbors or loved ones, especially those who live on rural roads, please let them know about our current outbreak of burglaries here and the fact that they gain entry by breaking-in a door or simply walking through open garage doors. Also, windows should be covered by blinds or curtains so burglars cannot see your valuables inside your house. The burglars usually knock on a door to see if anyone is home. If nobody answers the door, they break-into the house.

The following information is in answer to our request for a description of the vehicle used in the June 14 burglaries. If you see this vehicle and couple, please contact the FCSD Radio Room at 525-3333.

The vehicle is a red GMC, like a Blazer. During the burglary where the owner was out mowing, the lady in the car was letting her accomplice know where the mower was so that he could get out with the t.v. without being seen.
In the other burglary just south of PVMS, they broke through the back door to enter when the couple was both at work.
The vehicle description comes from a man who was in the bathroom when his home was broken into. He saw the man and the car when he came out of the bathroom.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following information is from a Township resident. Apparently, the victim of one of the 6/14 burglaries had left his garage door open while mowing in back of his home. It is wise to not leave garage doors open even while working outside on your property, especially in a rural area.
Hopefully, we can obtain a description of the burglars' automobile soon.

Lou,
A friend told me that the burglars are entering through open garages. In one instance the person was out back mowing. He had left the garage up and they were in and out with a flat screen in a matter of a few minutes. Supposedly there are 2 people, a man and a woman. The woman remains in the car.

Earlier this month, the vacant house at 6466 Oakhurst was rented to a man, Michael Lanham, who was released from prison last summer after serving time for a rape and an attempted rape several years ago. He drives a gray pick-up truck. The following notification from the FCSD has details about his appearance. If you cannot open the notice, he is 33 years old, Caucasian with brown hair and blue eyes. He is 5'9" and weighs 180 lbs. He has numerous tattoos on his body.
Some of you may realize that for many years we have had another registered sex offender living on Norton Rd. in Oakhurst who is a child sex predator. To our knowledge he has not approached any children in Oakhurst.
We do not expect a problem with Michael Lanham, but you have the right to know that he lives in your neighborhood now.

An adult male was arrested for the armed burglary at 6200+ Graessley Rd. No forced entry into 5200+ Thornhill CT. occurred when a burglar stole a 54" flatscreen TV, DVD player, Nintendo Wii Game, 2 computers, 2 computer tablets, jewelry, 10 Longaberger baskets, 25 figurines, underwater camera and paper shredder.
No force was used to steal a torch set & tanks, circular saw, a reciprocating saw, misc. tools and an air-cutting drill from an unlocked outbuilding at 6400+ Biggert Rd. A B&E was also reported at 7200+ Alkire Rd.
A 1500cc minibike was stolen from an unlocked shed at 6400+ Biggert Rd. Another theft occurred at 5600+ Biggert Rd. In Timberlake, a resident reported the unauthorized use of a credit card.
Although fewer burglaries were reported in February than in January, residents must lock their doors, cover and lock windows, turn lights on inside and outside their homes when it is unoccupied even for a few hours. If a radio is turned on (while the residents are not at home), this could discourage amateur burglars because they would assume somebody is inside the house.

During December one burglary, one B&E of an unoccupied structure and 8 thefts were reported in Pleasant Township. The totals for 2011 are 21 burglaries, 17 B&E and 86 thefts occurred.
In 2009, we had 53 burglaries, in 2010, we had 28 burglaries. This is encouraging news. However, we had more thefts in 2011 than in 2009 (71) or 2010 (59.) Most thefts occur not from forced entry, but because someone has forgotten to lock their vehicle or garage doors. Most criminal offenses have occurred on rural roads rather than in neighborhoods.
The one burglary this month was reported at 6400+ Biggert Rd. Entry was gained by FE through a rear door. A Nintendo, Wii game, MB & HW cars and WWII items were stolen.
The one B&E was reported at 7100+ Kropp Rd. Forced entry into a shed. Lawnmower, hoes, shovels and rakes were stolen.
No forced entry was reported in six thefts at:
Forced entry was used at 6700+ Harrisburg-London Rd.( GPS, misc. CDs, cigarette lighter converter) and
a salvage yard at 5800+ Harrisburg-Georgesville Rd. (30 auto batteries, 25 radiators, one tire grinder and one catalytic converter.)

Pleasant Township Neighborhood Watch members,
During November we had two burglaries, one breaking & entering of an unoccupied structure and two thefts reported in Pleasant Township according to the FCSD Detective Bureau report we receive each month. To date this year, we have had a total of 21 burglaries, 16 B&E, and 80 thefts. Although we have had a few more thefts this year than in 2009 or 2010, we have had fewer burglaries than the the 53 in 2009 or the 28 in 2010. The reduction in burglaries has been accomplished by the increase in patrolling of our neighborhoods and rural roads by the FCSD deputies and to an increase in public awareness of the need to take crime-preventive measures to decrease the liklihood of burglaries during the current economic recession.
The burglaries occurred at 6800+ Denton Road (FE) and at 8700+ Alkire Road. An attempted burglary occurred at 6600+ Gay Road, but was stopped when a brave 80 year-old lady confronted the young white man in her home. He and an accomplice had broken a front window to gain entry. The accomplice had walked out the front door. Their gray sedan was parked down the road from the house. Nothing was stolen.
The B&E and theft occurred at 5200+ Denton Road. Other thefts were at 7000+ London-Groveport Road (cell phone on playground) and at 7100+ Kropp Road (car battery charger and extension cord stolen from back porch.)
As reported in the Columbus Dispatch, the Franklin County Commissioners (O'Grady and Brown) are forcing the FCSD to make major cuts in their 2012 budget. Hopefully, this can be accomplished without reducing the patrolling of our rural roads and neighborhoods in Pleasant Township. Public safety is an important role of government!

On Gay Road near Harrisburg, someone knocked on the door and before the eldery lady could get to it, he left. She saw the back of him going down her sidewalk and his grey sedan was parked in her driveway. She went back into her room. A few minutes later, she heard a noise and when she walked into her kitchen there was a man standing in her hallway! Can you imagine how she felt??? She is 80 and lives alone. He had driven his car up the road and walked back to her house. He busted the window in the front of the house and let himself in. I imagine he didn't think she was home. She keeps the door to that room closed but he opened it and walked into her hallway. When she saw him she said, "What are you doing in my house?!!" He looked up at her astonished and turned around and jumped out the same window. Broad daylight into the front window! She said he was young (20's) a nice looking white man. The deputy sheriff called the detective and since no one was hurt and there was nothing stolen, they are not going to investigate it further.

A house in the area of 5000 numbers of LONDON GROVEPORT RD ORIENT was broken into. The young wife was just across the road for lunch with her two boys and then ran into Grove City to pick something up. When she got back her back door was open and her house was trashed. They used a crow bar to get in. The sheriff was called. They took a brand new apple computer, a TV, and had tried to take the TV from the upstairs room but dropped it so they left it there broken. The following note is from a member of our Pleasant Township Neighborhood watch. It illustrates the need for all of us to discuss with our children what they should do in the event of an attempted burglary, that is: dial 911 or 525-3333 immediately. The action of these college-age children after the fact is excellent.
Hi Lou,
We returned from vacation last evening. While we were gone, there was an attempted break-in at our home. Our daughter was in the house. When she heard someone on the back deck trying to open the door, she left through the front door. (She heard them saying, "It's locked." We CANNOT figure why she did NOT call the sheriff's office or 911 as it was happening. She called a friend who lives in the trailer park down the road and he came down. (I still can't believe that he didn't call the sheriff's dept.)
Our son came home from Cincinnati and checked out the house and wired a bunch of cameras throughout. He's majoring in criminology and he didn't report this either. Anyway I thought that I'd let you know. It sounds like some of the things that you have described in your emails.
BTW - it happened around 8:30 p.m.
Another recent incident in our neighborhood has apparently prompted a neighbor to keep his garage door closed during the day. Men in a beat-up red truck nosed around his open garage and yard and then rang his doorbell. When the resident answered the door, they asked if he wanted to sell an item by his garage door. An eyewitness reported this incident to us.

During August, just one burglary, one B & E, and 9 thefts were reported in Pleasant Township. At 5600+ Joy Rd. in Harrisburg, thieves entered an unlocked door and stole numerous wrenches and a tool box. At 7900+ Alkire Road, thieves entered an unocupied building through an unlocked door and stole an air compressor.
Most thefts are made without forced entry into a vehicle or yard: 4500+ London-Groveport Road (scrap metal); 7800+ Alkire Road (air compressor); 4400+ Zuber Road (prescription meds); 5900+ Harrisburg Road; 4400+ Zuber Road; and 6100 London-Groveport Road. Three other thefts were by deception or are closed cases. Numerous tools were taken by forced entry into a van at 6700 Lewis Drive near Norton Road.
We still have 3 deputies frequently patrolling Pleasant Township and hope we do not lose one due to any budget cuts made by Franklin County Commissioners as a result of cuts in funds distributed by the State of Ohio.

A second vehicle's windows were shattered by vandals at about 2:30 A.M. Sunday morning in the 6200+ block of Oakhurst Drive. Therefore, these were random acts of violence targeting vans parked at the end of driveways.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Very early Sunday morning (8/28) two windows on a van parked at the end of a driveway at 6200+ Oakhurst Drive were smashed out. Nothing was stolen. The victim speculates that the crime may have been committed by a vandal who had broken a garage window (or friend of his) at the residence in 2010. The victim had pursued the vandal and obtained a description for the FCSD. No other vehicles in Oakhurst Knolls were vandalized on 8/28. It is wise to park vehicles close to your house and have outdoor lighting on them to deter criminals.

For the month of July, 2 burglaries, 2 B & E, and 6 thefts were reported in Pleasant Township. An adult was arrested for a burglary at 5900+ Harrisburg-Georgesville Rd. on 7/21. Security cameras captured a picture of one of the burglars at 6000+ Lambert Rd. on 7/23. A suspect in this case is awaiting trial for a burglary he was indicted for in Columbus.
Thieves forced entry into a garage at 3800+ Neff Rd. on 7/10 and stole a power washer, metric tool set, hedger, welder, weed eater and generator. An unoccupied building was broken into on 7/11, at 7000+ Norwood Rd. in Darbyville.
Thefts occurred at 5200+ Harrisburg-Georgesville Rd. (garage door opener taken); 1000+ High St. in Georgesville (flat-bed trailer taken); 5900+ Harrisburg-Georgesville Rd. (2 bicycles taken); 6800+ Denton Road; 4900+ and 5200+ Big Run South Road. As usual these thefts were committed by amateur criminals just driving and walking up to vehicles or buildings and simply opening unlocked doors while residents are sleeping or not at home. Almost all of these thefts are preventable if we residents use outdoor lights, locks, security systems and, if necessary, security cameras.
If you live on a farm, do not trust strangers who pull into your driveway and ask stupid questions, e.g., "Is your truck for sale?" when no For Sale sign is visible. Three white men, aged mid 20s, driving an old white Blazer asked such a dumb question of a resident when she asked why they were in her driveway in July. Fortunately, they left when she said "no."

At the Pleasant Township Trustees meeting on April 12, a FCSD deputy asked that citizens be on the lookout for these known burglars: a couple in a very rusty old white or silver bullet-shaped Datsun, Saturn or Chrysler "K" car. The hub caps are missing on the drivers side of the car. The man is about 6' tall, weighs about 170 lbs., age 35- 50, has short brown hair, broken and yellow teeth and looks unkempt. The woman is 5' 4" tall, weighs about 120 lbs., mid-twenties, and has long dark blonde hair. They have knocked on numerous back doors and asked illogical questions when a resident answers the door. If nobody answers the door, they have broken into homes and stolen property, most recently on April 2.
If you observe this auto and couple, please phone the FCSD at 525-3333 and report the rusty old white car's license #, if you can, the couples's activities and the location and direction they are headed.

At the March 8, 2011 meeting of the Pleasant TWP. trustees, a FCSD deputy reported that two men were caught recently in the act of stealing copper piping in a vacant house in the vicinity of Seaman and Harrisburg-Wrightsville Roads in southern Pleasant Township.
Just one burglary and three thefts were reported within Pleasant Township in February. A burglar forced entry through the front door at 3500+ Norton Rd. and took misc. jewelry.
A 16" canoe was stolen at 8500+ Opossum Rd. A mailbox and the mail were stolen at 4800+ Norton Rd. The door lock was damaged on a vehicle at 2700+ Old Kropp Rd. and a Garmin GPS Unit was stolen.
Fraud was reported in incidents at 5300+ Timberlake and 5500+ Gay Rd.
The copper pipes burglary on Oakhurst Rd. was actually reported on January 29.
Please continue to be vigilant when the weather improves later in March.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An owner of a vacant home on Oakhurst Drive has had all of the copper piping stolen from the house sometime this month. A deputy had noticed an open door on the house one February morning while patrolling, but erroneously assumed that one of the owners had parked their car in the garage while checking on the house.
So if you notice an open door or window in a vacant house in your neighborhood, please call the owner or the FCSD radio room at 525-3333.
Also remember that an unlit or vacant house with a "For Sale" sign in the front yard is a temptation to potential thieves.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At 11:25 a.m. at 8700+ Alkire Road, a man with a gray car knocked on the front door. Despite a barking dog at the window, nobody answered the door. So he went to the back of the house and busted in a basement window. He left the property because the security sytem alarm was activated. If the owner of the house had not had the security system, the man would have definitely entered the house and taken whatever he wanted. Because this house had been burglarized a few years ago, the owner had made the wise investment in the security system.
